The technology at Oya’s core is pyrolysis. Pyrolysis is the decomposition of material using heat in the absence of oxygen.
The pyrolysis process releases syngas and creates ash. The syngas is combusted and the heat generated is used to maintain the high temperatures in the pyrolysis unit for the treatment of the next batch of waste. Excess heat can be used or converted to electricity.
Pyrolysis is very well suited to meet the challenges of destroying waste in developing cities.

- High operating temperatures ensure complete pathogen removal from the waste.
- Pyrolysis can treat a variety of materials, and so it can handle ‘sanitation incidentals’ that contaminate human waste.
- Once running, the process is self sustaining. Because of this, no electricity or water infrastructure is required.
